This is why I did not junk my old computer when I got the new one: I just turned on my external drive ((which has all of my documents on it–my new computer literally has nothing but games and the internet right now, whoops)), and my computer said “Hey, you know you need to format this before you use it, right?”

and the external hd is empty

eyyyyyyyyy.

((Trying to remember if the old computer has my music & digital pictures on it or if I shifted them off when the computer started acting up. Not like I needed to keep those 4000 pictures of Japan forever, right?))

so the answer is no, the digital pictures were not stored anywhere else

whoops.

Good thing I brought two bottles of wine home with me.

Well shit.

But not all hope is lost!!!

I had the same problem once: when I plugged in my external harddrive it told me it needed to be formatted. But there are programs that save previously deleted data, and they are able to save data in such cases as well! I bought a new external harddrive (because you need a place to copy all that data to) and the program (which was only available in combination with a computer or harddrive, but I’m sure there are programs you can buy by themselves), and it took quite long to find all the data and copy it, but it worked! (And somehow I still haven’t formatted my original external harddrive to this day, oops!)

And of course there’s the option to let a professional do that, but that’s really expensive compared to a program.

You should give it a try!

Thanks for the tip! I’ll grab @wasdplz as soon as she gets home from work tonight and see if she can figure it out. She’s got an external, too, and she understands the hardware bits of computers a lot better than I do, so hopefully she can dig up the right resources to work some magic.

I could live without the music, and I could even live without most of my documents, but 11 years’ worth of photos are a bit too much to swallow, ha! There were five countries and four states in that time period, including four years in San Francisco and two in Japan. If those are gone for good I’mma need a third bottle on hand. :D

On the bright side, I have hella space available on the harddrive now.
