They react as children do, and ask a lot of very pointed questions at first

Luckily Neil has had enough years to get used to the scars, and to get used to people seeing them and talking about them, and he quiets the parents’ horrified shit I’m sorry Neil with simple explanations. The kids take his answers at face value, and after their curiosity is sated they waver between interest and apathy.

When they are old enough to learn the full truth behind the scars, there will be more conversations, but.
